Stones Throw Records founder, Peanut Butter Wolf, ignited his affair with music at a young age; spending his weekly allowance on records and skipping cafeteria meals so he could use the lunch money for a more satisfying reward -- vinyl.

On the Stones Throw web site, PB Wolf references several of his personal musical influences -- Marvin Gaye, Cameo, Afrika Bambaataa. These days, many-a-folk call upon the Stones Throw roster to reference music influences of their own.

What began as a mission to provide hand-selected artists creative freedom, and more importantly, expose the music he made with close friend and musical cohort, Charizma, has evolved into a full-blown record label, reppin' artists such as Dam-Funk, The Stepkids, Myron & E, Jonti, Homeboy Sandman, Mayor Hawthorne, Madlib, and J Dilla -- JUST to name a few...KA

I do NOT own rights to this photo!

The first time I met Tim Walsh, Dan Edinberg, and Jeff Gitelman (and Lightman Dave!), I was pretty fresh to the radio gig; I was still pulling notes from Wikipedia for interviews -- even though I'm already a fan of their band, THE STEPKIDS...

When Tim jumped out of the van in flannel pajama pants, I knew it meant that we'd all be getting along just fine... A few formalities later, we were lugging a number of instruments from the parking lot to the studio...

Nervous as hell (even with my Wiki notes), I popped the mics, and cleared my throat. "So, you're music has been referenced as American Psych-Soul, Jazz-Funk Fusion, 60's Soul, and (pause... should I say it?) West African Traditional"...

I should have known (better)...

Luckily, these three dudes who, collectively, call themselves THE STEPKIDS, were extremely supportive of my dysfunctionalities, and (so) the session ended up being pretty fun...

Enough fun, apparently, that they (hopefully) voluntarily opted to meet with me again when they pre-funked Kimbra's crowd at Wonder Ballroom last October. Again, 'Lightman' Dave created visual wonders for folks like me to ooh & awe to, while THE STEPKIDS crooned a bit, then jammed on their instruments; simultaneously, then individually, then simultanelously -- causing confusion for some people in the audience, who excitedly asked, "are these guys the opener, or the  headliner?"

*************

Since then, THE STEPKIDS have been busy touring, filming some great, jazzed up cover songs (click photo above), and released their EP, Sweet Salvation -- a prelude to their 2nd full length album, Troubadour, set to release this September, on Stones Throw Records (of course).

The Stones Throw Soul Tour is next week, at Mississippi Studios. And, it won't matter who's opening -- or, who's headlining. 'Cause it's all love; family. The Stones Throw Family. Come n get some.

Last night I had a dream that I was at Funkmosphere. It was a glittery dream. The bass shook loud, and the crowd was WHAT!?!

Tryin' to be smooth, I shook my booty 'til I shook it all the way over to the DJ booth; trying to get a glimpse of (the shadow that is) the Ambassador of Funk himself; Dâm-Funk

Too realistically, I was on my tippy-toes, trying to see over the turntables; hoping to say "what up" to Dâm-Funk. I tried so hard. Too hard maybe.

Next thing I know, the funk speeds up; out of control. Then, everything goes silent. Dâm-Funk ('s shadow) is gone, and Funkmosphere is empty.

Somewhere in the distance, I hear some gawd-awful synth-shit getting louder. It's happy; whimsical, even... Oh sh*t! It's my alarm clock.

I once had the chance to chat with Dâm-Funk for a phone interview. It was a good conversation; we had a bit to talk about, and he's crazy kind and articulate. Though, I've been listening to Dâm-Funk for years, and it was (simply) not enough to quench the inner groupie inside of me...

Next week, I get my chance. No more elusive shadows. No more seizure-inducing cell phone alarms. I'm gettin' my glimpse on, at the Stones Throw Soul Tour.

As long as you're 21+, head on over to Mississippi Studios next Friday, 8/23/13, and you can shake your booty 'til you catch your glimpse of Dâm-Funk. Do it!

Myron & E.

Say it five times as fast as you can, if you can.

Can you?

Yeah, well...

You probably can.

Okay. then. Abort challenge. Here we are.

I'm sitting here watching a YouTube video of Myron & E performing live on KCRW's 'Morning Becomes Eclectic'. They truly sound as if they have been plucked from the days of Motown; from their smooth and amazingly effortless vocals, to their mid-verse, metaphorical call-outs.

Check this out: Myron Glasper and Eric 'E' Cooke met in the Bay Area, and started collaborating when they both traveled with Blackalicious. Then, Myron & E parted ways long enough for E to release an independent album under his solo project moniker, 'E da Boss'.

One day, E wound up jammin' with members of  retro-soul band, The Soul Investigators. The Investigators' producer forked over some unfinished tracks to E. Eventually, E called Myron to help write and lay vocals on [said] tracks. Myron & E and the Soul Investigators released a bit of damn-good funk 45s during 2008-2010. Two of those releases were issued on Stones Throw's 'Now Again'. Peanut Butter Wolf added Myron & E to the Stones Throw Fam in 2012.

Produced by Didier Selin, Myron & E's debut album, Broadway, features The Soul Investigators, and was released via Stones Throw Records on July 2, 2013.
